U20 European Championship
|Giedrius Staniulis was outstanding for Lithuania, posting a double-double of 17 points and 18 rebounds|
Finally, after a lot of worries and quick heart beats, Lithuania survived in Division A after a 78-62 victory over Austria in the last and deciding game in the Classification Round for 13th to 16th place.
The teams took to the floor knowing the winner survives and the loser drops to Division B, but Lithuania didn't leave any room for doubts.
After writing their worst performance ever in a European Championship, the Baltic team wanted to avoid an even worst situation and with a storming first quarter decided the game early.
Austria will join Croatia and fall back to Division B, yet they still deserve a lot of good words for their performance here, that with a longer bench could have been by far more positive.
Giedrius Staniulis led Lithuania with 17 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks, Darius Tarvydas added 13 and Dovydas Redikas finished with 11.
Anton Maresch topped the list for Austria with 18.
After four minutes, Austria were still down by just two points, 11-9 as Mareach scored already seven, but Lithuania answered with a blitz and stopped Austria from scoring almost until the end of the first quarter.
By then Lithuania scored 17 points in a row and held a 28-11 lead at the first buzzer.
Austria didn't have the manpower to recover from such a big deficit and Lithuania released some pressure until the final buzzer, in hope to fix the impression in 2012.
