U20 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Russia joined France and Italy in the next phase after taking an 81-58 win against Latvia in Group E of the U20 European Championship in Bilbao.
Thanks to this win, Russia now hold a 3-0 record in the group, tied with France at the top spot.
Latvia fell to 1-2, still good enough for the fourth place above Sweden and Slovenia.
Andrey Zubkov had 20 points and 8 rebounds for Russia and Pavel Antipov added 19.
Mareks Mejeris topped Latvia's list of scorers with 14 and was followed by Arturs Bricis with 12 and Martins Meiers with 10 and 7 rebounds.
The Russian side took a double-digit lead already in the first half and exampled their dominance equally along the game as the 23 points difference was reached inspite not winning any of the four quarters by more than seven points.
Antipov scored a three pointer and added a jumper early in the second quarter to register a 31-16 score as he already reached 13 points.
Bricis hit twice from the arc to keep Latvia in a reaching range, but Nikita Barinov and Ruslan Tumanov combined an 8-0 run that made it a 49-30 game.
Once again Bricis this time together with Mejeris cut on the gap, but one last Russian run shut down the curtain on this game early in the closing quarter.
Tomorrow Russia will attempt to remain perfect in the group against the winless Sweden while Latvia will try to overpower Slovenia in a key game for the Quarter Finals race.
